A new approach in teaching electrical engineering

The Technical University of Cluj Napoca presented the paper "Modelling the voltage distribution on a chain of insulators using OrCAD" at the 34th Annual Conference of the European Association for Education in Electrical and Information Engineering

Last summer, the Technical University of Cluj Napoca (TUCN) presented a new approach in teaching electrical engineering.

During the 34th Annual Conference of the European Association for Education in Electrical and Information Engineering (EAEEIE), REN+HOMES‘ partner TUCN presented a paper titled “Modelling the voltage distribution on a chain of insulators using OrCAD. A new approach in teaching electrical engineering”.

As the title suggests, the study focuses on a new way to model the voltage distribution on a chain of insulators.  The research was conducted based on the need to teach electrical engineering with the help of simulation packages. This is essential nowadays to examine circuit operations.

The modelling aims to appreciate the integrity of the insulation and the stress to which the elements in the chain are subjected. It also highlights methods of improving the distribution of the potential along the chain, to achieve an optimal demand for its elements.

The study simulates the equivalent electric circuit using OrCAD and assess the percentage voltage distribution along the chain of insulators and the voltage drop on each chain element. Finally, it compares the simulation results with those provided by known theoretical equations.
