The REN+HOMES project, dedicated to testing and implementing technologies for positive-energy buildings, has just celebrated its first anniversary. To mark this milestone, Alessio Pacchiana, Energy & Resource Efficiency Engineer at RINA Consulting, the project coordinator, provided some insights. The interview provided updates on the progress made over the past year and the ambitious goals set for the future.

Progress in the First Year

Talking about the achievements of REN+HOMES in its first year, Alessio Pacchiana highlighted the development of a universal positive homes methodology. This methodology focuses on co-design and co-assessment approaches and tools during the design phase of new buildings. Significant progress has also been made in the design phase of the four project demo sites located in Austria, Spain, Romania, and Estonia. These sites will serve as testing grounds for the innovative technologies and methodologies developed by the project.

Goals for the Upcoming Months

Looking ahead, REN+HOMES has several key objectives for the coming months. The project will deliver the building management system architecture and begin testing the integration of innovative technologies at the demo sites. By the end of the year, construction work will commence on the renovation activities at these sites.

In addition to these technical advancements, REN+HOMES is set to create a new generation of dynamic certificates. These certificates will consider both operational and design aspects, addressing issues such as material and water scarcity. This innovative approach aims to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of building performance.

Moreover, the project plans to hold two “explore and design labs”. These labs will analyse critical challenges and develop support strategies for technology implementation and resident engagement. Through these collaborative sessions, REN+HOMES hopes to enhance the effectiveness and acceptance of the new technologies.

As the REN+HOMES project moves into its second year, the team remains committed to advancing the field of positive-energy buildings. The progress made so far and the ambitious plans for the future underscore the project’s potential to revolutionize sustainable building practices.
