The Austrian demonstrator takes shape thanks to simulations and planning

REN+HOMES is making significant strides in sustainable and energy-efficient building solutions with its pilot site in Innsbruck, Austria. Led by Neue Heimat Tirol (NHT), the initiative benefits from the contributions of key partners, including GKN Hydrogen, the University of Innsbruck, and the Passive House Institute, along with other project partners.

Innsbruck innovative demonstrator: a “rocket-powered” dormitory

The pilot site features the construction of an advanced electricity and hydrogen driven dormitory, an innovative approach that is currently under development. This cutting-edge project aims to push the boundaries of energy efficiency and sustainable living.

Progress and achievements

So far, the project has developed a Passive House premium design based on a comprehensive 3D-building simulation. The study explored the thermal shell, photovoltaic potential, energy zoning, thermal bridges, and the building’s foundation. Energy requirements for building technology, including pumps, control systems, and household electricity, have been thoroughly recorded. A continuous cost optimisation process has also been implemented to enhance efficiency.

Work in Innsbruck is now focused on further design and detailed planning. This includes integrating a building-applied photovoltaic roof and a building-integrated photovoltaic façade. A study is underway to determine the best performance while balancing multiple design requirements, always keeping cost optimisation in mind. Additional planning is also being carried out for the integration of a seasonal energy storage system using hydrogen.

GKN and NHT have been actively collaborating on various aspects of the project. Several meetings have been held in South Tyrol, Italy, with NHT’s special planning team to discuss electrical and thermal energy supply. Inspections of existing systems have also taken place. The design of the GKN system has been developed in collaboration with NHT special planners, ensuring smooth integration into the demo building with ventilation ducts and a chimney. A strong exchange of data and simulations with the University of Innsbruck continues to support the project’s progress.

As development continues, REN+HOMES remains committed to pioneering sustainable and energy-efficient housing solutions. Further updates on this exciting initiative will follow.
